Phone Down, Just Drive

 UMassSafe is working with the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section on a project to combat distracted driving among commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers.  Over the last several years there has been a decrease in the number of CMV crashes in Massachusetts as well as proportionately significant decrease in injuries and fatalities.  Contrary to this crash trend, CMV crashes with reported driver distraction in Massachusetts have been on the rise since 2005 with an increase in both the number of CMV crashes involving driver distraction and the percent of CMV drivers with fault of distraction.  The project includes education on the dangers of driver distraction, enforcement and an evaluation with the collection of pre and post driver distraction data in pilot sites across the state.
