The Drone Revolution: Innovative Current & Future Applications

This workshop is designed to introduce both current and future UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone) users to some of the current UAV applications and other uses that are still being developed.  Regulations that apply to commercial users, as well as government employees, will be discussed and safety procedures and best practices will also be reviewed. Live demonstrations included!

Articles and videos on drone uses are being published and uploaded daily!  Check out this one from the ASCE Brief while you wait for the class .

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • To introduce attendees to current and future drone applications in civil engineering, agriculture, and emergency services.
  • To introduce attendees to the current FAA requirements for drone operations as they apply to both private and public entities.
  • To summarize the current FAA regulations including the proposed FAA Part 107.
  • To introduce both current and potential drone operators to some of the most common safety practices.

INSTRUCTORS

David Price, C.F.I.

Mr. David G. Price is the Vice President and Co-Founder of the Association of Professional Drone Pilots.  Prior to the Association of Professional Drone Pilots, Mr. Price was the Dean of Aviation at Bridgewater State University and has more than 25 years in aviation academia.  Mr. Price is also the Pilot in Charge at Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., a civil engineering firm, where he is responsible for all drone operations and develops safety protocols.  He is the FAA’s 2006 Teacher of the Year, and earned his professional MBA from Daniel Webster College (NH) with a concentration in aviation business.

John Diaz, P.E., P.T.O.E.
John Diaz is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering.  He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Massachusetts and has been active in the civil engineering field for more than 25 years, specializing in transportation and traffic engineering.  For the past 19 years, John has worked at Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI) and is currently Vice President and Director of the Traffic Engineering Department in the New England office.

John has extensive experience in traffic signal operations, design and asset management and has seen technology advancing rapidly in these areas.  Over the past years, advances in communications, and the use of LiDAR and photogrammetry have been effective in providing high accuracy, cost effective alternatives to traditional methodology.  With the addition of GPI’s Drone operations, John has been exploring new ways of utilizing the efficiencies of drone technology in all areas of civil engineering.

Scott Pitta - PRESIDENT AND CEO, ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL DRONE PILOTS
Scott is an FAA Airline Transport Pilot, Certified Flight Instructor, Advanced Ground Instructor, Instrument Ground Instructor and US Army instructor pilot. Scott has a Master of Aeronautics degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is also an Aviation Science adjunct professor at Bridgewater State University.

Scott has logged over 5,000 flight hours in addition to his twenty years of piloting and aviation experience. With his diverse aviation resume and passion for creating successful drone programs, Scott is now directing his talents toward improving the practice, best use and quality control in the growing UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) industry.
