Research and Background

Per Gårder is a professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Maine since 1992. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Lund on Pedestrian Safety at Signalized Intersections. His research is focused on evaluating facilities with emphasis on traffic safety for pedestrians and bicyclists; roundabout design; signalized intersection safety; and fatigue/distraction and the effectiveness of Continuous Shoulder Rumble Strips. He has authored over 200 journal articles and technical reports. He is currently working on traffic safety on and under bridges with an emphasis on pedestrian and bicycle safety. He is the recipient of the D. Grant Mickle Award and four Best Paper Awards by committees of the Transportation Research Board and has received the Swedish Institute of Transportation Engineers’ Traffic Planner of the Year Award. He was a Fulbright fellow in Finland in 2012 where he worked on autonomous/intelligent vehicles and pedestrian safety. He is an Associate Editor of Accident Analysis and Prevention. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Maine.
