Overview

MassDOT has established a Municipal Small Bridge Program to provide financial support to cities and towns for replacement, preservation and rehabilitation projects on small bridges known as BRI’s.  This workshop will provide an opportunity to obtain information about the program, including the application and reimbursement process, program requirements and schedule,  guidance on the MassDOT program review and design review process and a review of Frequently Asked Questions.

Who Should Attend
This course is appropriate for planners, engineers, and public officials responsible for planning, design, maintenance or replacement of municipally owned small bridges.

Class size is limited to 30 individuals

    State Bridge Engineer at MassDOT

    Alex is the State Bridge Engineer for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division.  In this position, he oversees the Technical Services Unit of the Bridge Section, which includes the In-house Bridge Design, Bridge Inspection, Ratings and Overloads, Metals Control, Geotechnical and Hydraulic Units.  He also oversees the development of MassDOT bridge design policy, standard details and standard specifications for bridge construction.  Alex is a member of the AASHTO Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures, the chair of its Technical Committee for Welding, vice chair of its Technical Committee for Timber, and a member of its Technical Committees for Seismic Design, and Guardrail and Bridge Rail.  He is also a member of several National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project Panels.  Alex received both his BSCE and MSCE degrees from MIT and is a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts.

    Tom is the Director of Bridge Project Management for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division.  He manages a staff of over 35 project managers and bridge engineers responsible for managing the designs and performing the technical reviews of all bridge projects designed for the MassDOT Highway Division.  He started with the former Massachusetts Highway Department as part of the Accelerated Bridge Program in early 2009, overseeing the project development process of the 200+ bridges in that program.  He is now responsible for the development of all bridge projects to be advertised and constructed by the MassDOT Highway Division.  Prior to joining MassDOT he spent 28 years as a consulting engineer working for several consulting firms in the greater Boston area managing and designing transportation infrastructure projects.
