Overview
Course Description
This workshop will provide students with both classroom and hands on time on a grader. Students will learn how to create a proper crown, shape a road, ditching, slope control, scarification techniques, blade pitch, grader articulation, and other things associated with operation of motor graders. All students will be given an opportunity to operate a grader and shape a roadway. Class size is limited to 10 students so sign up early as this class fills very quickly.
Target Audience
Anyone involved in gravel road maintenance weather or not you operate a grader. Supervisors will gain knowledge and things to look for in an operator.

Technical Training Specialist at UMass Transportation Center (UMTC)
Michael Smith is the Baystate Roads Technical Training Specialist. He was a Highway Superintendent for 20 years where he developed and implemented modern road maintenance techniques. Mike was responsible for day to day operations and long range planning for the municipality. Before retiring in 2015, Mike was also a firefighter for 34 years. He is a lifelong resident of Heath, Massachusetts, whose teaching style includes a healthy portion of humor and student interaction. Mike can be reached at: mdsmith@umass.edu.
