Research and Background

The applied research conducted at the University of Massachusetts Traffic Safety Research Program (UMassSafe) involves examining highway safety problems simultaneously from research and programming perspectives, allowing us to develop distinctive solutions to transportation safety problems. We seek to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes through crash data analysis, program development, training, and project evaluation. The UMassSafe Traffic Safety Data Warehouse, which includes over 14 databases over 20 years, was created to enable rigorous examination of safety-related data – both traditional and nontraditional – to better understand crashes, driver behavior, and related factors. Of particular interest is assisting highway safety players in translating data and research results into practical information to be used to implement programs to save lives.
