Alternative Intersections and Interchanges: Concepts and Applications

Signalized intersections are one of the most common forms of intersection control in urban and suburban areas in the US, and have traditionally worked reasonably well to control vehicular movements. However, many conventional signalized intersections are plagued by poor safety performance, operational challenges, or both. Over the past decade, alternative intersection and interchange concepts have seen increasing use across many state and local agencies, and with strategic support from FHWA are becoming a more commonplace alternative to traditional signalized intersections.

This course provides an overview of alternative intersection and interchange concepts, and the performance and design concepts that result in their operational and safety benefits over traditional signals. The course will then introduce the most common forms of alternative intersections, and discuss tradeoffs and areas of application for each.

The instructors for this one-day course will cover these topics:
•    Alternative Intersection and Interchange concepts
•    Overview of most common types of alternative designs
•    FHWA’s Every Day Counts Initiative and focus on alternative designs
•    FHWA Alternative Intersection and Interchange Guides Overview (2014)
•    Multimodal accommodations at alternative designs
•    Operations, safety, and design principles
•    Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) Intersections
•    Median U-Turn (MUT) Intersections
•    Displaced Left Turn (DLT) Intersections
•    Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDI)

Who Should Attend

This course is appropriate for planners, engineers, and public officials responsible for planning, design, and operating signalized intersections.
