The Drone Revolution Continues

The Drone Revolution Continues, as the UMass Transportation Center presents a 2-day, drone training event!  This workshop is designed for new and experienced users of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for both public and civil purposes.  Topics and discussions will include: applications, laws (including the NEW Part 107 Federal Aviation Regulations), drone programming, maintenance, and a day of hands on flight school training.  Join us for what will surely be the only training event of its kind in the area!  And if you have one - don’t forget to bring your drone!

Day #1 – Wednesday, November 2
Topics to include: Regulations, Programming, and Maintenance

Learning Objectives:

  • FAA Regulations that apply to drone users
  • The certification process
  • Operating limitations of drones in terms of airspace
  • FAA Knowledge, Skills and Requirements for Remote Pilots.
  • Proper drone maintenance and programming techniques

 

Day #2 – Wednesday, November 16 
Topics to include: Current & Future Applications, Flight Safety, and Flight Training, including rotation through a variety of stations to simulate:

-  Bridge Inspection
-  High Mast Lighting/Cell Tower Inspection
-  Ortho Mosaics
-  Volumetrics

Learning Objectives:

  • Current and future applications for drones
  • Drone safety practices
  • Operating principles of drones, and to allow attendees practical experience flying drones in various exercises. 

 

INSTRUCTORS

David Price, C.F.I.

Mr. David G. Price is the Vice President and Co-Founder of the Association of Professional Drone Pilots.  Prior to the Association of Professional Drone Pilots, Mr. Price was the Dean of Aviation at Bridgewater State University and has more than 25 years in aviation academia.  Mr. Price is also the Pilot in Charge at Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., a civil engineering firm, where he is responsible for all drone operations and develops safety protocols.  He is the FAA’s 2006 Teacher of the Year, and earned his professional MBA from Daniel Webster College (NH) with a concentration in aviation business.


John Diaz, P.E., P.T.O.E.
John Diaz is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering.  He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Massachusetts and has been active in the civil engineering field for more than 25 years, specializing in transportation and traffic engineering.  For the past 19 years, John has worked at Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI) and is currently Vice President and Director of the Traffic Engineering Department in the New England office.

John has extensive experience in traffic signal operations, design and asset management and has seen technology advancing rapidly in these areas.  Over the past years, advances in communications, and the use of LiDAR and photogrammetry have been effective in providing high accuracy, cost effective alternatives to traditional methodology.  With the addition of GPI’s Drone operations, John has been exploring new ways of utilizing the efficiencies of drone technology in all areas of civil engineering.

 
Scott Pitta - PRESIDENT AND CEO, ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL DRONE PILOTS
Scott is an FAA Airline Transport Pilot, Certified Flight Instructor, Advanced Ground Instructor, Instrument Ground Instructor and US Army instructor pilot. Scott has a Master of Aeronautics degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is also an Aviation Science adjunct professor at Bridgewater State University.

Scott has logged over 5,000 flight hours in addition to his twenty years of piloting and aviation experience. With his diverse aviation resume and passion for creating successful drone programs, Scott is now directing his talents toward improving the practice, best use and quality control in the growing UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) industry.
