DESCRIPTION: Course Description: \n\nThe Math Basics Series for Highway Technicians has been designed to provide you with all of the basic math concepts you'll need on the job. The series provides participants with a basic math review (including a review of using a calculator, basic arithmetic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as reviewing order of operations, decimals, and fractions), and then presents math instruction in context. Instead of solving abstract math problems, participants will immerse themselves in typical construction-related roles and learn how to approach math problems as they would in the real world.\n \n\n\n \n\nThere are 11 modules that make up this series—each of which explains an introductory math concept in a quick, interactive micro-learning experience. These modules occasionally reference one another and build upon previously explained math concepts. Its recommended that you start from the beginning and take all the modules in order. The topics covered in this series are as follows:\n \n\n\n \n\nArithmetic (TC3ED008-17-T1);\n \n\nOrder of operations (TC3ED009-17-T1);\n \n\nFractions (TC3ED010-17-T1);\n \n\nDecimals (TC3ED011-17-T1);\n \n\nPercentages (TC3ED012-17-T1);\n \n\nRatios (TC3ED013-17-T1);\n \n\nUnit conversions (TC3ED014-17-T1);\n \n\nMean (TC3ED015-17-T1);\n \n\nArea (TC3ED016-17-T1);\n \n\nVolume (TC3ED017-17-T1); and\n \n\nSlope (TC3ED018-17-T1). \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nUpon completion of this series, participants will be able to:\n \n\n\n \n\n- Perform basic technical mathematical operations manually and with a calculator;\n \n\n- Convert units, including fractions, decimals, and percentages;\n \n\n- Calculate ratios, slopes, and volumes; and\n \n\n- Use basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to solve construction-related math problems. \n\n*Participants who wish to earn Roads Scholar hours must complete all 11 trainings in this Introductory series.\n \n\n\n \n\nTraining level: \n\nThis training is recommended for the Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council levels I and II.\n \n\n\n \n\nTarget audience: \n\nThis course is for any individual who would like a basic technical math refresher, or an introduction to construction math in a transportation setting, including inspectors and technicians.
