Commercial Vehicle Crash Data Quality Assessment and Action Plan

UMassSafe coordinated an assessment of current commercial motor vehicle (CMV) data quality problems in order to develop an action plan for improving the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of CMV crash data. In order to do so, UMassSafe reviewed Massachusetts crash data quality challenges and previous assessment recommendations, interviewing various CMV stakeholders, and finally convening the CMV Data Quality Review Team. This effort was part of larger project headed by the Massachusetts State Police CVES – utilizing Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Safety Data Improvement Program (SaDIP) 2014 funding - to preserve and improve upon the integrity of the CMV crash data as a means for preventing roadway crashes. As a result, the improved dataset became available for use by the FMCSA in order to identify problems and trends in relevant data reporting and also evaluate the effectiveness of specific programs.
