International Driving Symposium on Human Factors in Driver Assessment, Training, and Vehicle Design Announces Honda Outstanding Student Paper Award Winner

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO – The 10th International Driving Symposium on Human Factors in Driver Assessment, Training, and Vehicle Design is pleased to announce that Ganesh Pai Mangalore of the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been awarded a 2019 Honda Outstanding Student Paper Award honorable mention. 

The award, sponsored by American Honda Motor Company, Inc., provides a certificate and cash award to the student who conducts outstanding research accepted for presentation at the International Driving Symposium on Human Factors in Driver Assessment, Training, and Vehicle Design (also known as the Driving Assessment Conference). 

Mangalore’s paper, Can Virtual Reality Headsets Be Used To Measure Accurately Drivers’ Anticipatory Behaviors?, reviews middle-aged drivers’ glancing behavior at latent hazards and how there appears to be an opportunity for VR headsets to expand the powers of simulation for both research and clinical practice. Mr. Mangalore is supervised by Professors Michael Knodler and Donald Fisher of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

“The caliber of student papers we receive for the Driving Assessment Conference is always outstanding, and this year is no exception. Our reviewers and Organizing Committee had a difficult task in selecting the 2019 winners,” said Dr. Daniel McGehee, Organizing Committee Co-Chair. “Award recipients showcase the best and brightest internationally in the field of human factors driving research.”

The International Driving Symposium on Human Factors in Driver Assessment, Training, and Vehicle Design is a biennial conference founded in 2001. The conference is focused on providing an interdisciplinary forum for scientific exchange between users of driving assessment tools, applications and technology. Attendees include researchers and practitioners working on applications of driving assessment from the perspective of engineering, psychology, medicine, and public health. This year’s Driving Assessment Conference was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico June 24-27, 2019.?
