Roundabouts-Why, Where, When & How
Circular intersections have been part of the transportation system in the United States for over a century. Roundabouts are different than rotaries and other circulars and have proven to reduce the severity and frequency of crashes. The instructors for this one-day course will present the findings and guidelines used to develop and design a roundabout. They will highlight the differences between older traffic circles and rotaries and new roundabout design features. They will also address the typical questions of why, where, when and how roundabout design should be considered as an appropriate intersection solution. This course includes lectures on roundabout design techniques, a selection of tools used for public involvement, and interactive discussion. The basis for the course is NCHRP Report 672: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide, 2nd Edition, various State supplements, the latest information proposed for the HCM and MUTCD, research from NCHRP Report 572 and other studies.
