Saved by a Traffic Engineer: Advancing Multimodal Safety through Research and Practical Use of the MUTCD and other Design Guidance
The transportation engineering profession is at an important moment with calls to improve upon safety performance and increased scrutiny. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) has been described as "notorious" for the difficulty it presents in implementation of a safe systems approach. In this short course, practitioners will be provided a summary of updates to the MUTCD with some insights into future direction from the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
The training will include materials from the most recent release of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, also known as the AASHTO Bike Guide. It will also include other relevant multimodal design guidance from NACTO and ITE. The event will conclude with insights on traffic signal timing strategies to improve safety performance and insights into research that will further inform practice.
This event is free to attend and will run from 8:00AM to Noon with lunch to follow.
This event is accessible to people with disabilities and individuals with limited English proficiency. If you need a reasonable accommodation (such as American Sign Language Interpreters, assistive listening devices, handouts in alternate formats, etc.) and/or language assistance (such as translated documents or an interpreter) to fully participate, please email admin@umasstransportationcenter.org or 413-545-2604 at least 14 days prior to the event. Such services are provided free of charge.
