Course Description:

The three most important components of any road is Drainage, Drainage and Drainage!
How an agency maintains, installs, and reconstructs its drainage system is critical to the long-term success of a roadway and roadway network. This class is a comprehensive, interactive discussion of what techniques may be utilized to provide highway departments both big and small to better utilize the limited highway funds allotted.

The class is designed for Directors, Foreman, Supervisors and Operators who want to learn the importance of the following:
• The importance of inspecting existing structures and why
• Proper culvert and pipe installation procedures
• The effects of frost heaving on roadways
• The cause and effect of inadequate compaction
• Testing and verification (through good specifications)
• Selecting proper road materials, aggregate size, shape, and quality
• Many other topics will be covered

Upon completion of the class students will be able to identify the proper road building materials. Understand the importance of compaction and testing! Better understand how drainage issues cause most of their road related distresses. If an agency utilizes some of the techniques discussed in the class, long-term roadway improvements will be seen and realized.
