Research and Background

Dr. Michael Plotnikov is currently working as a Research Associate in the UMass Transportation Center in Amherst. The focus of Dr. Plotnikov’s research is on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) and their integration into the National Air Space. In collaboration with Dr. John Collura, he developed a comprehensive UAS Management System to help address the challenges associated with civilian-oriented UAS deployment including registration; pilot training and licensing; operations; inspections; traffic management and control; standards testing; and fleet management. In addition, he is exploring UAS applications in precision agriculture together with Dr. Collura and UMass faculty at Cranberry Bog Field Station in East Wareham, MA. Dr. Plotnikov has authored several publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports. A recent relevant publication includes: Plotnikov, Michael, John Collura, and Richard Brody “The Need for a Comprehensive Unmanned Aircraft Management System”, Proceedings of the Transportation Research Board, National Academy of Sciences, Washington D.C. 2016.
